Jamshedpur - kolkata- Chilika, to Photograph migratory birds

Feb and time for the migratory bird to go back to where they came from, and it is also time for me to make a quick dash to Chilika backwaters and marshlands to see if I can score a few bird in action images.

9th morning I was off to Kolkata where from I would go on to Chilika Lake with a few more friends, it’s always nice to do these trips in group I feel, 1. Company keeps things exciting and interesting 2. Makes us not so boring 3. Makes one realize, there is other elements in life too other then just creating images which happens in a group 4. Cheaper on the pocket too Plan is: Head to Kolkata on 10th Relax and do a final check up before a trip, buy supplies as needed on 11th Drive / ride to Chilika on 12th Boat ride to spot birds on 13th – 14th and 15th morning, n back to Kolkata on 16th feb latest Shop for accessories for my new bike on 17 and 18th, n ride back to Jamshedpur on 19th / 20 th But then weather office predicted rains on 10th, so 9th morning I was ready to head out to Kolkata and meet a few friends with whom we would all be riding / driving to Chilika lake 9th morning was as gloomy as could be, looked like it could rains too, I was in two minds to start out on 9th itself or wait for the last moment till11th and head out to chilika straight from Jamshedpur

But then the fog and clouds cleared out by 0900 hours and I was off seemed to be sunny and all well as I headed out and 60 km into the ride, suddenly it was just fog and fog, as I rode, I saw a friend at a dhaba, Billu the dhaba on the highway, stopped to say hi to him and we spend a good 20 minutes chatting and having a cup of coffee

Before I started out again, it was a interesting ride mostly and was quiet tame, reached Kolkata in 6 hours time approx., some traffic at Dankuni expressway but being on a bike one can always wizz by and squeeze in between lanes of vehicle’s Reached kolkata and met with food, typical Kolkata food, of Puffed rice and pumpkin flowers excellent food for “ chai and Adda “ translated stands at: tea and snacks to do chit chat with.

DAY 2 Chilika lake Our journey started at 0530 hours on 12th 11th night we had all stayed together so we could do a early morning departure, Google predicted it would be 11 hour journey

We thought we would beat traffic at this early hour of the day, but then we are in a metro city and trucks ply at these early hour, so we did not make too good a time to make it out of the city, post which it was not too bad and we were doing ok, we took a coffee break at Kolaghat at 0800 hours, the roads were just amazingly good and by 11130 we were at Bhadrak, we stopped on the road to have a sandwich which Mr. Burman one of the participants of the trip was kind enough to get for us, which we presumed we would have on the way and in the car, but a stop was a welcome change to stretch and eat in the calm of a break , the sandwich was from The Hungry tide and were just amazingly good club sandwich.

Not being sure how long it would take as we had entered Orissa and the road condition was beginning to detoriate, while we were paying toll, it was mostly roads with diversion for constructions of sorts, we did lose some time and we were in Cuttack by 1400 hours the need for food was beginning to tell on us and we chanced on a great restaurant just as we left Cuttackcity the food was wonderful, we tried the local fish and a vegetarian thali, and glad we did

We reached our night stay Eco-resort by 1730 hours and were we glad to get off the car and stretch A charming home stay, with mud walls and simple food, and hot water, what more could one ask for,

We got some well-deserved rest and got ready with our equipment we would be heading out to make images at 0600 hours next day.

see you then
