The Bengali new Year , celebrating Gomira Pooja , part 2 of 3

Is Buri Ma ( form of ma kali – worshipped during Baisak month ) CALLING us ? As you might know only when the gods call do we get to make the trip’s to meet the Gods and Godess's.

Morning of this day we started out from Behrampore, after a morning walk in square field in the heart of the city, playing with coco and soon it was too hot to horse around anymore, time to head out for Aminpur. The roads were mostly good and the last 30 km was state highway, else it was 4-lane highway.

The state highways though slow are a pleasure to be on and the view is just mesmerizing.

We got to Aminpur in 4 hours time ( My father was born in this village and this house,  calculating his age  and me this house is 98 years and there were three generation before him here.Easily 200 + year old)

we had a wonderful meal to cool our self, food prepared by my cousin and his wife. served on banana leaf

And then we headed out for Gomira Puja at Katashan village adjoining AMinpu; time to take part in the festivities to celebrate BURI MA

Starting on New Year day of Bengali’s

A spiritual event happens called GOMIRA dance.

It originated in South and North Dinajpur of West Bengal.

Gomera is colloquial for Gram Chandi a female deity of Ma kali also called – Buri (old women).

Masks are used for worship.

The masks are made of Gama tree wood, and are amazing workmanship involved, it is carved from a tree and painted and polished.

Ritualistic worship happens of the OLD LADY (who is form of Ma kali) and No celebration is complete without live music and the musicians did their part to build up the frenzy amongst the worshipper.

As rituals continue there are instances of spirit’s entering some of the worshipers and they go in a stupor /dance wildly, have a great time being all excited and totally indulged in worship of the Goddess, the crowd’s are mesmerized too as the Puja progresses.

And so was I as I witnessed invocation of Gods and spirits, and it sure was a interesting sight to behold, the onlookers were of all age and size and all were welcome to come and celebrate Gomira Pooja.

soon it was time to wind down by 1500 hours and worship of Ma was over.

Evening celebration started by 1600 hours

There were groups of performers who showed up in the evening to entertain and tell different Mythological stories

Use of mask by the performers made it more interesting and story telling that much richer.Amazing energy of the performers and expressions on those without masks made it a wonderfull evening.

As stories were enacted about :

Asurs torturing folks and Gods alike

Ravan getting killed,

   Ma kali killing the Asurs

Devi Durga in battle with Asurs  to name a few ...

Audience participation is high and there are lots of joy amongst the ladies and men of evil being destroyed and Good winning what an amazing day it was indeed. We wound up for the day by 2100 hours Bringing in the New year In style indeed.
